When my oldest son, Andrew, was a lad, he would always look forward to the monthly arrival of our subscription of the National Geographic. By the time he was 5, he was an avid reader and he would grab the magazine as soon as it arrived and pour over the articles and fascinating photos. Since he was so young, though, he mispronounced ‘Geographic’ instead calling it ‘Geography’, so the periodical was known at our house as the National Geography. The whole family loved reading it, and we always kept a huge stack of old issues, because they were worth reading more than once!
We were sitting in church one Sunday morning, and Andrew was next to me, idly thumbing through the hymn book as the Pastor thundered from the pulpit. He was expounding on the sins of the world, and began to weigh in on the evils of pornography. Andrew snapped to attention, turned to me with a horrified look and blurted out ‘Mom! We have stacks and stacks of those books!’ … the Head Deacon’s wife did such a sharp intake of breath that she sucked 3 hymnals out of the holder on back of the pew in front of her.. Which everyone heard, cause at that point, you could hear a pin drop.
‘Wha..what? What are you talking about??’ I stammered. Little Andrew was in tears by now ‘The National Geography - Pastor says reading Geography is a sin.’
.. just one more reason I was white headed by age 30..
